How to combine Columns in Excel files
- Drop your file onto the upload area. The first two columns are ticked by default and the output name is set to both names joined by an underscore.
- Tick the columns to combine in the order you want them joined. Each ticked column shows its position (#1, #2, and so on), and the order follows your clicks, not the file's column order.
- Type the separator, such as a space, ", " or " - ", and set the output column name.
- Tick Remove source columns if you only want the combined column, then click Combine Columns.
- Check the preview and download the file in the same format.
Your file is processed locally in your browser and is never uploaded. The free limit is 50 MB per file; larger files work if your device has the memory for them.
Worked example
An international order export stores the delivery address across four columns. The courier's upload form wants one address line per parcel.

Values are joined in the order the columns were ticked, with the separator between them. Tom's postcode is empty, and it is skipped along with its separator, so there is no ", ," gap. With the source columns removed, full_address takes the position of the last source column. Unticked columns such as recipient stay where they were.
Working with Excel files
This replaces the Excel habit of writing =A2&" "&B2 and filling it down. Most cells on the first sheet are read as displayed, so the combined value uses what you see. A price shown as $1,200.00 joins as $1,200.00, which is usually what you want for labels. Date cells are the exception. Any cell with a date format loads as a real date and joins in ISO form, so a date shown as 3/14/26 joins as 2026-03-14, and a date-time joins as 2026-03-14 09:30:00.
Blank cells are skipped along with their separator, unlike a simple & formula, which would leave a double space or a stray comma. The combined column is written to Sheet1 as text cells. If you tick Remove source columns, the original columns are gone from the output workbook, and there is no formula linking back to them. Keep the original file if you may need to split the values again later.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is this the same as CONCAT or TEXTJOIN in Excel?
It behaves like TEXTJOIN with ignore_empty set to TRUE: values are joined with a separator and blank cells are skipped. The result is a plain value, not a formula.
Will Excel dates keep their format when I combine columns?
No. Cells with an Excel date format load as real dates and join in ISO form, so 14 Mar 2026 becomes 2026-03-14. If you want another layout, run Format Timestamp on the date column first, then combine. Dates typed as text join exactly as typed.
What happens to empty (null) values when combining columns?
They are skipped, and so is the separator next to them. Combining "Cork", null and "Ireland" with ", " gives "Cork, Ireland". Empty strings are not null, so they are joined as-is.
Can I combine more than two columns, and control the order?
Yes. Tick as many columns as you need. They are joined in the order you tick them, shown as #1, #2 and so on next to each column name.
Can I leave the separator empty?
Yes. With an empty separator the values are joined directly, for example "AB" and "123" become "AB123".
