About YAML

YAML (YAML Ain't Markup Language) is a human-readable data serialisation format built around indentation rather than brackets or quotes. It is the standard configuration language of modern infrastructure — Kubernetes manifests, Docker Compose files, GitHub Actions workflows, Ansible playbooks, and CI/CD pipelines are all written in YAML. Its readability makes it ideal for files that humans edit by hand.

YAML is a superset of JSON: any valid JSON document is also valid YAML, and the two convert losslessly in most cases. That makes YAML-to-JSON conversion one of the most common tasks for developers working with configuration — many APIs and tools accept only JSON, while the source of truth is maintained in YAML for readability. Tabular data can also be represented in YAML as a list of mappings, which converts naturally to CSV or Parquet.

YAML's flexibility is also its main hazard: indentation errors, ambiguous type coercion (the famous 'Norway problem', where the country code NO parses as boolean false), and version differences between YAML 1.1 and 1.2 parsers. The tools here parse YAML 1.2, so NO and yes stay strings. Our YAML tools convert YAML to JSON, CSV, Excel, and Parquet, validate structure, and transform data — entirely in your browser, with nothing uploaded.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between YAML and JSON?

JSON uses explicit brackets, braces, and quotes; YAML uses indentation and minimal punctuation. YAML supports comments, anchors/references, and multi-line strings, which JSON lacks — making YAML better for hand-edited configuration and JSON better for machine-to-machine data exchange. Since YAML is a superset of JSON, conversion from JSON to YAML is always safe; the reverse is safe for the vast majority of documents.

Can I convert a YAML file to CSV?

Yes — if the YAML document is a list of mappings (one mapping per record), it maps directly to rows and columns. Use the YAML to CSV converter here: drop the file, and each mapping becomes one row. Nested mappings are not flattened, so convert deeply nested YAML to JSON first and use the Flatten JSON tool. Files with several documents separated by --- are read in full, and the records from every document go into one table.

Why does my YAML file fail to parse?

The most common causes are inconsistent indentation (tabs are not allowed — YAML requires spaces), a missing space after a colon, unquoted strings that look like other types (e.g. NO, ON, 1.0, or values with a leading zero), and special characters in unquoted strings. Use the YAML Viewer here to locate the parse error, then quote any ambiguous values.

Is YAML good for large datasets?

No. YAML is designed for human-edited configuration, not bulk data — it parses slowly and has no compression or schema. For datasets beyond a few thousand records, convert YAML to Parquet for analytics or CSV for interchange. Keep YAML for the configuration layer.
