About converting Excel to Markdown
A Markdown table is the quickest way to put a small slice of spreadsheet data into a README, a GitHub or GitLab issue, a pull request description, a Notion page or developer documentation. Retyping a table by hand is slow and error-prone, and pasting straight from Excel into most Markdown editors gives tab-separated text rather than a table.
The converter writes a pipe table with a header row from row 1 of the first sheet, a --- separator line, and one line per spreadsheet row. It is meant for readable tables, not data transfer, so it covers the first 1,000 rows. Most renderers struggle well before that. For a docs page, 20 to 50 rows is usually the practical limit.
Cell text that would break the table is escaped. A pipe character becomes \| and a line break inside a cell becomes <br>, which GitHub renders as a new line inside the cell. Formatting like bold, colours and number alignment is not carried over, and all columns are left-aligned. To right-align numbers, change the separator under that column from --- to ---: after copying.
Worked example
A small orders export with an ID, a customer name, a date, an amount (one missing) and a true/false flag, converted with the default settings.

- Row 1 of the sheet becomes the table header, followed by a | --- | separator row.
- Each data row becomes one line that starts and ends with a pipe.
- Empty cells stay empty between pipes, as for order 1004's amount.
- Pipes inside cell text are escaped as \|, and line breaks become <br>.
- Dates appear as yyyy-mm-dd, and booleans appear as true or false.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I convert just part of a sheet to Markdown?
Copy the rows and columns you want into a new workbook and convert that. The converter always uses the whole first sheet, up to 1,000 rows.
Does the Markdown table work on GitHub?
Yes. It uses the GitHub Flavored Markdown pipe table syntax, which GitLab, Bitbucket, Notion, Obsidian and most static site generators also support.
Why do prices look exactly like Excel but dates do not?
Most cells are read as the text they display, so $1,200.46 appears as shown. Date cells are the exception and are written as yyyy-mm-dd, so 3/2/26 appears as 2026-03-02. Set a price column to General in Excel if you want plain numbers.
