How to use the Pivot Table tool
- Drop a data file into the box, or click it to browse. CSV, TSV, Parquet, JSON, NDJSON, Arrow, Excel (.xlsx or .xls, first sheet) and YAML files work, up to 50 MB. The tool reads the file type from its extension.
- Pick the Row field. Each distinct value in this column becomes one row of the pivot table.
- Pick the Column field. Each distinct value becomes a new column header, so choose a column with 100 or fewer distinct values.
- Pick the Value field and an aggregation: SUM, COUNT, AVG, MIN or MAX. Then click Run Pivot to see the first 200 rows of the result.
- Click Download CSV to save the full pivot table.
Worked example
You have one row per sale and want total revenue per region, split by quarter.

West,60,The two South Q1 sales (80 and 20) are added into one cell of 100. The quarter values Q1 and Q2 become column headers. West has no Q2 sale, so that cell is blank. Row order in the output is not guaranteed, so sort the file afterwards if you need a fixed order. Switching the aggregation to COUNT would give 1, 2 and 1 in the Q1 column instead.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I make a pivot table from a CSV file without Excel?
Drop the CSV on this page, choose a row field, a column field, a value field and an aggregation, then click Run Pivot. The result is a cross-tab you can download as CSV. No spreadsheet program or account is needed.
Why do I get an error about too many distinct values?
Every distinct value in the column field becomes its own column. The tool stops at more than 100 distinct values because a table that wide is hard to read. Pick a column with fewer categories, such as month instead of date, or swap the row and column fields.
What does COUNT do in a pivot table?
COUNT returns how many non-empty values of the value field fall into each row and column combination. Use it to count orders per region and month, for example. SUM adds the values, AVG averages them, and MIN and MAX return the smallest and largest.
Why are some cells empty in the result?
A cell is empty when no rows in your file have that combination of row value and column value. For example, if the West region had no sales in Q2, the West and Q2 cell stays blank rather than showing 0.
Is my file uploaded when I build a pivot table?
No. The file is read and pivoted inside your browser. Nothing is sent to a server. Files up to 50 MB can be dropped on this page.
