Rank Rows in YAML Files Online
Add a rank column to YAML files based on any column's values. Choose RANK, DENSE RANK, or ROW NUMBER, with optional partitioning — runs entirely in your browser.
About this tool
Add a rank column to a YAML file using rank(), dense_rank(), row_number(), or percent_rank(). Optionally partition by a group column so rankings restart per group, and choose any column as the sort key. A common step in analytics before filtering to top performers or computing percentile bands. All processing happens locally in your browser.
Frequently Asked Questions
What ranking methods does the YAML rank tool support?
rank() assigns the same rank to tied values and skips subsequent ranks (1, 1, 3). dense_rank() assigns the same rank to ties with no gaps (1, 1, 2). row_number() assigns unique sequential numbers with ties broken arbitrarily. percent_rank() returns a fractional rank from 0.0 to 1.0.
Can I rank rows within groups in a YAML file?
Yes. Set a Partition By column and the ranking restarts from 1 for each unique group value. For example, ranking sales amounts partitioned by region gives each region its own independent 1st, 2nd, 3rd place.
Does the sort order affect rankings in a YAML file?
Yes. Set an Order By column and choose ascending or descending. Rank 1 goes to the smallest value in ascending order or the largest in descending order. Without an Order By column, rankings are based on physical row storage order, which is usually not meaningful.
Is my data private?
Yes — completely. Your file is never uploaded to any server. Everything runs locally in your browser using WebAssembly — processing happens entirely inside your tab. Once you close the tab, nothing is retained.
What is the maximum file size?
The free limit is 50 MB. For larger files, performance depends on your device's available memory — most modern machines handle 500 MB to 1 GB comfortably.
