About the TSV viewer

The TSV viewer reads tab-separated files, the format used by many database exports, bioinformatics tools, spreadsheet copy-and-paste and Unix command-line pipelines. Tabs are invisible in a text editor, so it is hard to tell by eye whether columns line up. The viewer splits the file properly and shows each column with its detected type.

Drop a .tsv file to see the total row count, the column list with types, and the first 500 rows. The delimiter is detected from the content, so a file saved as .tsv that actually uses commas will still open, and you will notice the difference in the column count. Quoted fields are handled, so a value wrapped in double quotes with a tab or line break inside stays in one cell. Everything runs in the browser. Nothing is sent to a server, which matters for exports that contain customer or patient data.

What to check when you open a TSV file

  • Every row has the same number of columns. Stray tabs inside values shift data into the wrong column.
  • The first line was taken as headers. Generic names like column0 mean it was treated as data.
  • Columns that should be numbers are not VARCHAR. Trailing spaces or placeholder text can cause this.
  • Long text fields are not cut off where a line break appeared in the original data.
  • There are no unexpected empty columns at the end, which come from trailing tabs on each line.

Your file is processed locally in your browser and is never uploaded. The free limit is 50 MB per file; larger files work if your device has the memory for them.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can the TSV viewer open .txt files with tab-separated data?

Yes. Drag the .txt file onto the drop area. The file picker only lists .tsv files, but a dropped text file is read the same way and the tab delimiter is detected from its content.

Why does my TSV have an extra empty column?

Each line probably ends with a tab. That creates a final column with no header and no values, which appears with a generic name such as column5 and all nulls.

Can I edit values in the viewer?

No, the viewer is read-only. Use the Find and Replace, Rename Columns or Fill Nulls tools to change the data, then download the result.
