About converting YAML to HTML

YAML data files often drive pages on static sites. A list of team members, events, sponsors or changelog entries is a typical example. Converting that YAML to an HTML table is useful when you need the same data outside the site generator: in a CMS page, an email, an internal wiki that accepts HTML, or a quick preview in the browser without a template.

The output is plain table markup: <table>, a <thead> row of <th> headers taken from the YAML keys, and a <tbody> with one <tr> per record. No CSS, classes or inline styles are included, so the table takes on the styling of the page you paste it into. Values are HTML-escaped. A YAML value containing <b> or a script tag shows as literal text and does not run.

The table is flat. Lists and nested mappings become JSON text in one cell, so flatten them first for a cleaner table. Missing keys and nulls give empty cells. Links stored in YAML as URLs are shown as plain text, not anchors. The output covers the first 1,000 records and shows a notice if the list is longer.

Worked example

A small orders export with an ID, a customer name, a date, an amount (one missing) and a true/false flag, converted with the default settings.

What changes when you convert YAML to HTML

YAML keys become <th> header cells in the order they first appear.
Each record becomes a <tr> row of <td> cells.
A null value such as order 1004's amount becomes an empty <td></td>.
Values are escaped, so <, >, & and " appear as text rather than markup.
The markup has no attributes, classes or styles.

Your file is processed locally in your browser and is never uploaded. The free limit is 50 MB per file; larger files work if your device has the memory for them.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use this output in a Jekyll or Hugo page?

Yes, you can paste it into a Markdown or HTML page, since both generators pass raw HTML through. For data that changes often, a template loop over the YAML data file is easier to maintain than pasted markup.

Why are URLs in my YAML not clickable in the table?

All values are escaped and written as plain text. Wrap the cells in <a href> tags after conversion, or build the table with a site template if you need links.

Is there a limit on how many records become rows?

Yes, the first 1,000 records. The page shows how many records the file has, so you can tell when the table is incomplete.
