About converting TSV to HTML

TSV to HTML is handy for publishing a tab-delimited result as a web page without a build step: a supplementary table on a lab or project website, a summary produced by an analysis pipeline, or a static page of sample metadata. Anyone with a browser can then read the table without opening a spreadsheet.

The output is a plain <table> element with a header row and one row per TSV line. It has no styles, scripts or page wrapper, so it drops into an existing template, a Markdown page or a CMS HTML block, where the site's own table styles apply.

Text is escaped, so characters common in scientific data display correctly. Thresholds like <0.001, labels like R&D and quoted strain names are shown as text instead of breaking the markup. Tabs never reach the HTML, because they are the delimiters. A quoted TSV field that contains a line break keeps it inside the cell, where browsers show it as a space. Only the first 1,000 rows are included, since a static page longer than that gets slow to scroll.

What changes when you convert TSV to HTML

  • The TSV header becomes a row of <th> cells in <thead>.
  • Each TSV line becomes a <tr> with one <td> per column in <tbody>.
  • NT5C's apostrophes are left as they are, since they are safe in HTML text. The characters & < > and " are escaped.
  • SREBF2's missing tpm is an empty <td></td>, so the columns stay aligned.
  • tpm values are written as parsed numbers (24.7, 8.13), with no rounding and no thousands separators.

Your file is processed locally in your browser and is never uploaded. The free limit is 50 MB per file; larger files work if your device has the memory for them.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I add the table to a Hugo site?

Paste it into a Markdown content file. Hugo's default Markdown renderer strips raw HTML, so set markup.goldmark.renderer.unsafe = true in your site config, or put the table in a shortcode or layout template instead.

Is the table accessible to screen readers?

Mostly. Header cells are real <th> elements, so screen readers announce column names as users move through the cells. Add a <caption> describing the table and scope="col" on each header cell for more robust markup.

Can I make gene symbols link to a database?

Not during conversion, because cell text is escaped. After converting, use a regular-expression replace in a code editor to wrap each symbol in a link, for example to https://www.genecards.org/cgi-bin/carddisp.pl?gene=TP53.
